The future of business is nature positive: key insights from the I4N Dinner at the SDG Tent

By Barbara Dubach, Executive Director, Innovate 4 Nature

The urgency to transition towards a nature-positive economy has never been clearer. At the SDG Tent during the World Economic Forum 2025, we had the privilege of hosting an exciting evening with leaders from business, policy, startups and finance on how to collaborate for success and create value from nature-positive solutions. The conversations were insightful, the challenges undeniable, but the opportunities immense.

Here are some of our key learnings

1. Nature is no longer a CSR initiative—it’s a business imperative

Companies are starting to realise that nature is not just a philanthropic cause but an essential component of a resilient economy. The World Economic Forum reported that approximately $44 trillion—more than half of global GDP—is moderately or highly dependent on nature. Businesses that fail to recognise this will face regulatory pressure and increasing risks to their supply chains, operational stability, and brand reputation. The time for voluntary action is over—nature must be at the core of corporate strategies.

2. The business case for nature is stronger than ever

At the same time, there are numerous opportunities. Investing in nature-positive solutions has economic value: according to the UN Environment Programme, a global push to meet nature-related sustainability goals could deliver more than 20 times the return on investment. This is not just a sustainability argument, it’s a financial one. From regenerative agriculture to biodiversity credits, businesses that integrate nature-positive solutions are gaining a competitive advantage and future-proofing their operations.

3. Leadership matters: we need more long-term visionaries

Our planetary survival and short-term returns are not compatible. Paul Polman, former CEO of Unilever, emphasised that true leadership means making choices that prioritise long-term value over short-term gains. Too many companies are stuck in outdated business models, optimising for quarterly returns rather than a nature-positive future. CEOs and board members must step up, challenge existing financial incentives, and integrate nature into core business decision-making.

4. Corporates must embrace collaboration, not just competition

No single company can solve the biodiversity crisis alone. The transition to a nature-positive economy requires partnerships between corporates, startups, investors, and policymakers. Businesses must move from competitive to cooperative leadership: joining forces with startups providing innovative nature-positive solutions and forming coalitions that advocate for stronger regulatory frameworks.

5. Startups hold the key to breakthrough innovation

Many of the most promising solutions in nature restoration, sustainable materials, and ecosystem services are emerging from startups. However, they face significant challenges in scaling their innovations due to limited funding and corporate barriers to adoption. Businesses can and should step in to help accelerate their impact: by integrating them into their value chains and actively supporting nature-positive innovation through investment and procurement, they can both contribute to a regenerative future and gain a competitive advantage from innovation.

6. We need to align financial incentives with nature-positive outcomes

The financial system currently rewards environmental destruction more than conservation, prioritising shareholder returns at the expense of planetary health. We need to shift incentives so that natural capital is properly valued—whether through biodiversity credits, new accounting frameworks, or mandatory impact disclosure. Investors have a crucial role to play in this transition.
